Legendary tales of the lives of famous people and historic episodes. Originally published 1896.
[Junior - legends] Of these fifty stories, some have historical value, some are useful as giving point to certain great moral truths, and others are intended only to amuse. A few of these stories are from very ancient sources and are current in the literature of many lands, while many of more recent origin have come to us through the ballads and folk tales of the English people. Nearly all are frequently alluded to in poetry and prose.

James Baldwin was born in 1841 and died in 1925. For eighteen years he held the post of superintendent of the graded schools in Indiana, and afterwards began editing and writing educational books of his own. Beginning in 1882, with The Story of Siegfried, he went on to write more than fifty others. His influence was widely felt because, at one time, it was estimated that of all the school books in use in the United States, over HALF had been written or edited by him.
