About the author:

Howard Pyle was born in 1853 and died in 1911. Famous as a unique illustrator, his artwork appeared regularly in Harper's Weekly, and in many other American magazines. In 1894 he began teaching illustration at Drexel University. In 1900 he founded his own art school, where he taught such notable students as Maxfield Parrish, Olive Rush, Jessie Willcox Smith, and N.C. Wyeth. Howard Pyle had a keen interest in romantic, chivalric, history, and wrote several self-illustrated adventure stories for young people. These included The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, The Wonder Clock, The Garden Behind the Moon, The Story of King Arthur and His Knights, and Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates. His story Men of Iron was made into the 1954 movie The Black Shield of Falworth.
